THE MERSEY BOWL 2010
The Mersey Bowl competition between the five Mersey Clubs was hosted this year by Northenden Golf Club on Sunday 6th June. There were 126 pairs taking part and, as always there was fierce competition between the clubs. The day was a dry one and the course was in excellent condition with lightening fast greens. With a Foursomes format, high scoring was at a premium. However, the target was set quite early in the day with two scores, one from Chorlton and one from Northenden, of 38 points heading the leader board. They remained the leading scores and we are delighted to report that, on a card playoff, our very own Dave and Carol Nelson took the individual prize. With an allowance of only six shots they came back in par. A truly remarkable effort!
As the day progressed the best six scores for each team changed many times until, at the end of the day, Chorlton were leading Northenden by one point in the race for the Bowl. With tension and anticipation rising all of Chorlton’s team were in with no change to the 210 points scored. Northenden had three pairs still out on the course and a score of 209 points. With two of the three pairs now in and still no change in the overall points score everything depended on our last pair, Larry McDonald and Ursula Greenwood. A score of 33 points was needed and they came in with the magnificent score of 36. The Mersey Bowl had come to Northenden in more ways than one.
Congratulations must go to the winning pairs whose scores gave us the victory. They were:- Dave and Carol Nelson, Linda Dolan and Richard Singleton, Mike and Pauline Earley, Patricia McKenzie and Nick Hughes, Alexi Hughes and Mary Millican and Larry McDonald and Ursula Greenwood.
Well done to them and to all of those both taking part and helping to organise a very successful and memorable event.
The final scores for each of the clubs were as follows:-
NORTHENDEN 212 points CHORLTON 209 points DIDSBURY 195 points SALE 207 points WITHINGTON 198 points |
